Gunnar Lie

Gunnar Lie at the Manila International Book Fair, 2009
I was born in Norway in 1951 and spent most of my free time “helping” my father at Johan Grundt Tanum Bookshops.

I dropped out of college when I was 16 and started working for Akademiboghandeln in Århus in Denmark in 1968. I sadly had to leave after a year because of asthma bronchitis. I then worked for Casalini Libri in Florence (a company supplying Italian literature to The Library of Congress) for 9 months before I went back to Norway to work full time at Tanum and complete my “A” Levels.

In 1974 I went to Herriot Watt University in Edinburgh and graduated in 1977 with a BA in Business. Later that year I joined Hamlyn as their Export Sales Manager for Scandinavia, later promoted to Export Director and in subsequent years as part of Reed, Export Sales Director Reed Children’s Books and International Sales Director Reed Consumer Books.

I left Reed in 1995 to set up my own export sales company Gunnar Lie & Associates Ltd.
