Following a year in printing and two years bookselling at Hatchards in London and Brentanos in Paris, I joined William Collins in 1976.

Following a stint in Fontana home sales repping North London (I drove a bright yellow Cortina Estate in flaired trousers and we were given a weekly cigarette allowance) I was lucky enough to get a job in 1977 with the Collins export team representing Pan and Fontana in the open markets with a great team of colleagues: David Love, Ray Kennedy, Simon Fowler, Trevor Atherton and Geoff Mulligan among many others.

It was a wonderful time and many happy years in export followed, pretty much travelling to every country around the world for Collins, Granada, Andre Deutsch, Macdonald and Little, Brown.

I left Little, Brown in 2002 and started a literary agency: The Viney Agency.
